"Passionate, responsive, dedicated, creative" – Many smaller charities and the work that they deliver is invaluable. In particular they are flexible enough to meet the needs that larger charities pass by. Although often undervalued, many serve important causes that are otherwise overlooked.
However, there are dangers in being small - all that passion and dedication can lead to burn-out. Having to keep on top of so many aspects, managers can find it tough to know what to say ‘no’ to. Leaders can get so absorbed in the vision that they lose sight of the best way forwards.
I really enjoy the challenge and variety of my consultancy work. Using my experience and skill to help smaller charities, to be able to bring problem solving and creative solutions is a great privilege. To see Trustees, managers and staff encouraged and re-invigorated is profoundly rewarding as well as feeling that I'm doing my small part in the bigger picture.
